Another picture of my beautiful girlfriend! I started off practicing some dodging and burning by creating a new layer in CS4 and setting its blending mode to soft light and paint with black and white brushes at a low flow. This process took forever…There are different ways to retouch a photo but dodging and burning is probably the best as it preserves skin texture. The downside is you have to work every pore…
I quit after spending about 2hrs and did it another way…I can’t imagine how pro retouchers manage a bunch of projects at once. I did a few retouches and added a tilt-shift type blur by hitting Q to create a quick mask and drawing a gradient - inversing the selection - lens blur.
She was lit with one large softbox on underexposed white.

dustinbryson:

We are stoked that the Panama City Downtown Improvement Board is doing a write up on us. They asked us for a photo, so we shot this.

A quick shot I took of the co-owners of frshnk and injoy studio. After a few shots they were like, “what are we doing? This isn’t us at all!” and this photo was produced. Lit this photo with one large soft box and lit the backdrop with a gelled 430EX. I’m really getting into a lot of research on post processing. A lot of the stuff I see online drives me nuts on how they can do it. I’ll get there eventually….

Here’s an out-take from a shoot I did a few days ago. This is Leta, she likes to design clothing. I knew her since High School, well I didn’t really know her. High School is weird. Once you graduate, everyone seems to disappear! I guess that shows who your real friends are!
In this shot, I metered the ambient and set up a single strobe with a large soft box above camera left set at 1 stop under ambient. Since the ambient light outside was 1 stop over the strobe, the windows were overexposed. This played off well because beyond the windows weren’t really pretty.
I’ll keep adding pictures every few days.

So it’s been a while since I’ve last updated. Tsk tsk. I’m not really doing a fine job on keeping this updated! But hey, it’s 2010, that’ll be amongst a few new years resolutions I’ll need to keep up with.
Time has passed by so quickly this year. I’ve done a lot of adventurous things like moving to New Jersey on a whim, driving 22hrs straight, getting a photography job, obtaining a girlfriend and finally renting an apartment. But those things seem to happen to everyone, lately. I want a real adventure! Something I can blog 5 times about and still come up with new and interesting content.
I think this year, I’ll try my best to keep moving forward and not standing still. I’ve missed out on a lot of opportunities in 2009. Maybe I was so caught up in this lifestyle, I couldn’t really justify doing those things. Or maybe I was so used to doing what I was doing, it felt out of place if I didn’t keep my own routine. Or it could possibly be those around me who I feared would judge me and break ties. Who knows!
All I know is, I will keep progressing. 2010 is going to be ridiculously awesome. It’ll have explosions, chases and those 1990’s “we’re in over our heads” kid adventures. I need to stop caring about other people’s feelings to an extent. They’ll get over it. I need to grasp on the fact that I can’t please everyone. This year, I’m going to be a bad ass.
Oh, and this photo is semi irrelevant. I just need to start posting more photos. He’s a fellow I shot at the homeless shelter. He kept asking me if there was something wrong with him since I was so interested in taking his picture. I told him he had a cool beard.

Say what?
Who said the 5D’s focus speed was slow! During a session, I heard a Ferrari drive by on a private road going over 70-100mph and I turned around to shoot it. To be honest, I thought I was going to miss it because I was shooting on One Shot, 1fps mode. I guess I got lucky!
I am now saving to upgrade to the 5D Mark II. Buy my 5D. :)

Help Portrait!
The concept is pretty cool. Go out and do portraits for people who are less fortunate. The location was awesome. I should have taken more pictures of the place…I’m sure someone at the event took a couple. Everyone did good despite the lack of real solid direction. We all winged it and rocked it. Totally slipped it and dipped it.
It was a blasty blast.
Oh and I’m getting punched in the face.

Photoshop Friday! Saturday re-edit

Vintage colors & High pass sharpening Photoshop CS4 Tutorial

Awesome! I finally embedded a video…It took me forever. If anyone wants to do screencasts with Jing, make sure to resize your resolution. This one was taken at around 720x400 or something like that…

Don’t mind my blabber on the video, hopefully you get the idea.

If you want to see this video in another window or max size click here.

If you want to see more examples, visit my Flickr page here.

Lost

Hmph, I can’t seem to find my 2 shoot through umbrellas and 1 stand + umbrella/flash mount. I can remember using it about a month ago but after that…poof!

SuxX0rz. Rainy days always motivate me to experiment with something…I wish my gear would pop up somewhere!

Anyways, I finally sold my beloved Mamiya M645 1000s. Too bad I didn’t get the best out of it. I even bought a scanner to scan the negatives. Goes to show that old technology can trump today’s. Meh, at least I still have my Canon A-1!!! I need to get a replacement battery and start firing off some rolls. Film dynamics < Digital.

Hopefully within this week or next, I’ll sell my 5D and buy a 5D Mark II. I really don’t need the upgrade. The 5D has done a good job at making me look awesome and taking awesome pictures. I guess what has grown on me is video recording…Lately, I’ve been having a lot of vivid-cinematic dreams. It’s a sign! I want to start goofing around and make some really artsy fartsy videos for my blog.

Alright, I’m going to outer space. I’ll be back with pictures.

Meet Marvin. He’s a punk. An overall nice cat. But as soon as he smells food, he goes crazy and becomes the most annoying thing evar. He’ll smack the food right out of your mouth. He also likes to play in the middle of the night and bite my feet in the morning!
Even though, he’s a punk. He’s pretty coo. Yes, “coo”. Marvin is on my belly and pressed the period key. What a punk!
